Wasted Dollars in Failed Research

A majority of all public research dollars go to medical research. And a majority of medical research dollars are wasted on a set of failed ideas–namely, that detailed genome mapping would lead to an explosion of understanding and cures for diseases.

As it actually turned out, most diseases depend on complex interactions of large numbers of genes that have large numbers of variant alleles, and we are almost back to square one. Yet, as just reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association the dollars keep flowing.

  1. To be clear, I am not arguing for all programs. My point is that the big genome project as a whole is vastly overfunded, because it has no final outcomes. If we cut funding to big data genomery by 50%, we could still fund programs that haven proven their potential.
