Limits for Ethical Politicians

The job of an ethical politicians is to make the world a better place. It is extremely hard to do that if you won’t get elected. And it is impossible to get elected if you always tell the unadorned truth. At a minimum you must evade and duck certain questions. For example, a majority of voters are not going to go for a candidate who openly points out that they should elect her because she is in fact much smarter and much better informed and much less bigoted than they are.

But ducking and weaving is the easy part. In some cases there are questions that can’t easily be ducked and also can’t be answered honestly. For example: do you give priority in scheduling face-to-face meetings with major contributors? Also: in what ways do your political values differ from those of a majority of the voters? And how about: have you ever made secret deals with other politicians?
