The Importance Of Specialization
Posted on January 3, 2017
Humans rose to ecological dominance by virtue of several capabilities, of which I believe the single most important is our capacity for expert specialization. People who work at almost any socio-economic niche for a decade or two become incredibly good at it zovirax dosage. Conversely, the most demeaning and unpleasant work is that which requires almost no special expertise at all. Of course there is a hierarchy of talent and ability and achievement in any niche, but you will discover yourself heavily outclassed by any ordinary journeyman if you try to perform in an unaccustomed niche.
Economic progress consists, in human terms, of constantly redesigning and creating new niches of specialization. Farmers and frontiersmen of necessity tend to be generalists, good but not great at quite a number of things. Most other roles require highly specialized human capital.
Now we are engaged in a cycle of great destruction, in which numerous work niches are vanishing or being transformed almost unrecognizably. Human beings will always devise new niches, but in a transition time like this many of the new niches will be parasitical and antisocial. In particular, violent crime is always the low-skill employment of last resort.
Prepare for rough times, exacerbated by socially counterproductive Trumpist policies.
