CAFE and Jobs

Trump says he is going to save jobs by relaxing Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency standards. Sure enough, that’s another lie. How many cars does he think we are going to export in a few years if our cars are less efficient than Asian and European cars? How competitive are American cars going to be domestically after they fall behind on fuel standards?
Granted, weaker standards does mean more profits for US corporations in the short run, but that does not translate into more US jobs. Instead, it translates into the kind of short-run thinking that made American cars relatively noncompetitive in the 70s and 80s and 90s. People my age can remember a time when no one bought foreign cars.
