David Burress is Founding President of Kansas Progress Institute, which was founded in 2005 under the name of the Ad Astra Institute of Kansas. A son of third-generation Kansans, he spent much of his childhood on a Sedgwick County farm and in Winfield and Emporia. He graduated from Oberlin College and has a Masters in physics and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has lived in Lawrence since 1985. He has worked as a computer systems analyst and as a professor of Economics. In 2004 he retired from the University of Kansas Policy Research Institute, where he worked as a Research Economist and studied state and local taxation, economic development, and transportation policy, and regional modeling. He served on the Kansas ACLU Board from 1987 through 2016, and also served on the ACLU National Board. He has been active in Lawrence and Douglas County civic organizations, including sevice as President of the local League of Women Voters and as Chairman of the Planning Commission. His current research interests include antiabortion violence and the unification of the social sciences. He also blogs for KPI.
